Life in Glastonbury, CT

Glastonbury is a Connecticut town located in Hartford County that dates all the way back to 1693. While the town was founded in 1693, settlers actually began coming to the area as much as 30 years earlier in 1663.  The town is located seven miles to the southeast of the city of Hartford, and it is on the Connecticut River. It was named for Glastonbury, England and its population as of the most recent census was close to 35,000 people.

Glastonbury spans 52.2 square miles and it is considered to be a census-designated place. It extends from the banks of the Connecticut River up into foothills, where residents and visitors alike can get a beautiful view of the skyline of downtown Hartford.

Many of the developments in Glastonbury where residents live are built on steep hills, including the area’s major residential development which is on Minnechaug Mountain. Other developments surround Diamond Lake, a small private lake which is accessible only to members of the Diamond Lake Property Association, which is an association of homeowners who reside in large lakeside properties. One of the steep areas in the town, which is officially called Kongscut Mountain, is informally known as Rattlesnack Mountain due to the population of timber rattlesnakes that reside largely in state forests located in the area.
