Communities We Serve – Simsbury , Connecticut

Taking the time to create a comprehensive estate plan is one of the most valuable gifts you can give to your loved ones as well as to yourself. Not only will that plan provide for the distribution of your estate assets when you are gone but it will also help them grow while you are here and help protect and provide for you and for your loved ones.  At Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates, P.C. we know that the prospect of selecting an attorney to assist you with the creation of your Simsbury, Connecticut estate plan may be a bit daunting. We are committed to creating not just an estate plan with you, but a lifelong relationship so that you feel comfortable and confident about the estate plan we create together.

Simsbury, Connecticut

Located in Hartford County and covering approximately 14.5 square miles, the town of Simsbury, Connecticut was home to 23,511 residents as of the 2010 Census.

As was the case in most of modern day New England, indigenous peoples once inhabited the area we now know as Simsbury. By the early 17th century, European settlers were living in what is now the State of Connecticut. In fact, the town of Windsor, which was settled in 1633, was the second town in Connecticut settled by Europeans and the first English settlement. The area that would one day become the town of Simsbury was, at that time, known as “Massaco” and was considered an “appendix” to the town of Windsor for many years.

Several years after John Griffin and Michael Humphrey started a tar and turpentine business in Windsor, around 1650, a Massaco Indian named Manahanoose started a fire that destroyed tar belonging to Griffin. Although the court ordered wampum as compensation for the damages, Manahanoose delivered a deed to the land at Massacoe instead. A survey conducted in 1669 showed 13 permanent residents of Massacoe.  On May 12, 1670, the General Court granted the petition to establish Massacoe as a town of the colony of Connecticut. The Court also ordered that the plantation should be called “Simmsbury.” The origin of the town’s name remains a mystery; however, a prevailing theory is that the name of Simsbury comes from the English town of Symondsbury.  Sadly, the original town of Simsbury was pillaged and then burned to the ground on March 1676. Historians have described the destruction at Simsbury as the most extensive of any event of any Indian War in New England.

Over the course of the 18th century, copper was discovered in Simsbury which led to the first copper coinage in America. Eventually, the copper mine became the infamous New-Gate Prison of the Revolutionary War. The first steel mill in America was also located in Simsbury. The town of Simsbury grew little, in terms of population over the next two centuries. In fact, it wasn’t until the second half of the 20th century that the town began to see significant growth, blossoming from just 5,000 residents in the 1950s to almost 25,000 today.

Simsbury’s long, and colorful, history allows the town to remain a quintessential New England community.  Simsbury was named the 4th best town in Connecticut on Connecticut Magazine’s list of top places to live 2013 and 9th best town to live in 2015 in the United States by Time magazine. Residents are also proud of their award winning school system. Simsbury High School was ranked 4th best high school in Connecticut by Niche and 9th by U.S. News & World Report in 2016.

Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates, P.C. in the Simsbury, Community

To the attorneys and staff at Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates, P.C. our Simsbury, Connecticut clients are much more than just clients – they are our neighbors, little league coaches, teachers, friends, and even family members. We are honored, therefore, to be able to help each and every one of them with their estate planning needs both now and in the future.

We work very hard to develop and nurture lasting relationships with our estate planning clients because estate planning should not be something that is completed in one sitting and then forgotten. Instead, change sin your life should lead to corresponding changes in your estate plan. Initially, your estate planning needs will likely focus on the desire to avoid leaving behind an intestate estate should something happen to you. For that, a simple Last Will and Testament is sufficient. As time goes by, however, you may find the need to add in additional components to your estate plan. When you marry, for instance, it may be time to incorporate incapacity planning into your overall estate plan. When you experience the joy of parenthood for the first time it may be time to incorporate and asset protection strategies as well as strategies aimed at protecting your minor children into your estate plan. As the value of your estate grows, you will need to consider tax avoidance and asset protection tools as well. Finally, as you look toward your “Golden Years,” you will want to incorporate your retirement plans into your estate plan and add Medicaid planning to your comprehensive estate plan along with funeral and burial planning tools to ensure that your final wishes are honored.  Our goal at Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates, P.C.  is to be with you throughout your life’s journey and help ensure that the people and things that are important to you are protected at all times.
