Communities We Serve – Litchfield County

Within Litchfield County, there are people of all ages who do not yet have plans for what could happen if you become incapacitated or if you unexpectedly pass away. Whether you are old or young, it is dangerous not to have a plan in place for your future. You need to work with an elder law and estate planning attorney to use the legal tools that Connecticut law provides to take care of yourself and your family.  Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates is here to help you do just that.

Life in Litchfield County

Litchfield County is a county located in the northwestern part of the state of Connecticut. This county is home to around 190,000 people and it is a part of the greater New York metropolitan area. Although it is the largest county in Connecticut in terms of geography, it is also the county with the lowest population density within the state.

Litchfield County has no local county government, like all other counties in Connecticut, but the county does provide its own services like police and fire protection. The county was first created back in 1751 and it spans 945 square miles total, including 24 square miles of water.

In Litchfield County, 4.6 percent of seniors aged 65 and older were found to be living below the poverty line in the most recent census. Living below the poverty line is a major challenge for older people who cannot work. You should not have to be worried about money as you get older; you should be enjoying a comfortable retirement. If you begin retirement planning early, get the right legal help and take steps to protect assets, you can achieve security as a senior. This is just one of many tasks that Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates can help you with.

We serve the following cities in Litchfield County as well as all the surrounding communities. If you live in Litchfield County we can help you.

  • Goshen
  • Litchfield
  • Morris
  • New Hartford
  • New Milford
  • Sharon

Seniors in Litchfield County

Seniors often require community support, special programs aimed at helping the aging, and benefits to provide for them as they age. The state of Connecticut has a State Department on Aging that helps to coordinate support and services for the elderly. The State Department on Aging indicates that seniors in Litchfield County can get help through Western Community Choices. There are two locations for seniors to seek assistance:

  • Independence Northwest: 1183 New Haven Rd. #200, Naugatuck. Independence Northwest can be reached via phone at (203)729-3299.
  • Western CT Area Agency on Aging: 4 Progress Lane, Waterbury. The Agency on Aging can be reached via phone at (203)757-5449.

Many other senior services may also be available, especially to veterans who could be entitled to VA benefits for the elderly. Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates can provide older residents of Litchfield County and their families with assistance in identifying sources of aid and other community programs that can preserve quality of life and protect health.

We also offer assistance on wills, trusts, charitable foundations, asset protection, IRAs and retirement investment accounts, and more. We can help you to pass property and businesses outside of probate to save hassle and avoid taxes, and can assist you in making certain you have a solid plan for end of life issues and for your legacy.

Courts in Litchfield County

Although you may work with an elder law and estate planning lawyer to avoid probate court, not everyone makes plans in advance to avoid guardianship or the probate process after a death. If court action is necessary, having a strong advocate by your side is essential. Nirenstein, Horowitz & Associates represents individuals and families in all legal matters before the probate court.

For those in Litchfield County, the probate court where legal proceedings will take place is the Litchfield Hills Probate District 24. There are three court locations where probate courts for this district are found:
